Hi I'm Jason and I had my first cigarette back in grade seven, my first year of senior high school at age 13 and yeah I know I was young and easy influenced like many young kids at that age. I made sure my last Cigarette was in the evening which also happened to be the last one in my pack too. Thinking about a few of the things I have mentioned earlier I started to change my mindset and tell myself how much I really did hate smoking. I calculated how much I spent on smokes a week and worked out that by quitting I would be saving around 250 a month, now that is a lot of cash. Thinking about where I could use that extra money made me even more eager to quit.


I made sure I would have to stay away from friends that also smoked for a while helping me reduce the urge to join them, that meant not going to the pub or parties but who cares I 'm the one that's going to benefit in the long run yeah! And so will you.


I won't sit here and tell you that it was a walk in the park because it wasn't it was bloody tough going. I didn't use any help just plain cold turkey and I can tell you now that it was the best way. After making it through the first 24 hours I was starting to feel a little better, the cravings had weakened a little. By the end of the first week I had already adapted to my new routine without smokes and felt that I was actually on way to Beat the cravings once and for all. On the occasion if I saw somebody I knew and they were smoking I would look and feel a slight urge but that's all it was and now 12 years later I can proudly say I am still going strong. I'm healthier, more energetic and I have an amazing partner and two beautiful girls.

What Does Smoking Do For You?

If I ask you the question "What does smoking do for you?" your answer, and everybody else's answers, will be totally different. Whether you have smoked before or not, I think you may still believe that smoking does have some positives to it. If it didn't, why would so many people get hooked in the first place? OK, so it is the nicotine that is addictive, but that must be because it is doing something good.


This is exactly what I used to believe. I knew that I was addicted to nicotine and I knew that the negatives about smoking far outweighed the positives, but I still believed there were some positives. I thought it helped me relax, others thought it helped them focus, I also thought it helped me handle stress (except most of my stress came from not being able to smoke in some situations) and still others said they just enjoyed it. I even thought I enjoyed the taste and the process of smoking.


Think about what I just said for a second. Smoking raises your heartbeat and blood pressure, we all know that, so how can it relax you? Some people smoke when they are bored, others smoke to unwind or to focus, how can a cigarette offer all those things? Most of them contradict one another. I'm not sure how I thought I enjoyed it, if I could only get hold of a brand that I despised, I would still smoke, and who enjoys feeling smoke go down their lungs? It's called suffocation.


It is all in the mind. When you feel stressed, you are also craving a cigarette, but the craving is so small you aren't aware, so you smoke a cigarette and feel a bit better, your mind then associates smoking with stress relief.


Fortunately, I learned that it is a common misconception that withdrawal pangs from cigarettes are unbearable and cause a lot of pain and irritability. Again, this is all in the mind. If you can sleep for 8 hours without even being woken up by withdrawal, why can't you face the thought of going 8 hours without a cigarette while you are awake? You start experiencing shakes, stress, anxiety etc, and this is all caused by the perception that you are missing out on something.


Smoking does nothing for you except enslave you to the idea that you can't live without it. The only things you can't live without are food and water, and maybe the Internet. If you can learn to accept these facts, and work on the psychological aspect of the smoking trap, you can quit very easily.

Wake Up and Breathe: Stop Smoking Part 1

"You are a fifty-one year old woman with the lungs of a seventy-five year old... " the doctor began. My ordinarily youthful, upbeat attitude took a dive when he clarified "you smoked for thirty-two years, about two packs a day?" "Sounds about right." I replied, beaten. After all, it's not like I asked him "Why me?" or "How could this happen?" I knew perfectly well how I arrived at this moment and I'll tell you that for a person with few regrets in her lifetime, this one suddenly loomed large. Still, a hint of a bedside manner would have been appreciated even though I am a bottom line kind of woman. I got the message.


When the news is dramatic and frightening, of the no-turning-back variety-- you take heed. This is real. This is the direct result of choices I made; there is no one else to blame. Sickening, completely helpless emotions tried to drown my fortitude and I admit, for a few days I lounged on the pity pot. But only for a few days because I am blessed with a resilient spirit.


Thankfully, I'd awakened to the realization that I was slowly killing myself and after countless attempts at quitting smoking, I finally did it March 25, 2001. Fast forward to April 2006 and I'm reflecting on my last major asthma attack in the seventies, wishing my (then) record of quitting for 9 months, 22 days and 8 hours had stuck. But no, it was the time of white Chic jeans with rainbow stripes down the sides and I owned a few pair: size five, size seven, size nine but when I had to purchase size 11, I picked up a pack of cigarettes on my way back home from the local shopping center. Smoking since I was a pre-teen with anesthetized taste buds, a pretty poor appetite and until then, a metabolism that others envied, I wasn't prepared for the results of eating six Heath Ice Cream Bars in one setting. I hadn't a clue what might occur when I devoured quart upon quart of Italian Ices or any of the similar indulgences I abused during those nine months. Size eleven on my 5'4" frame was more than my ego could bear so lighting up nipped that problem in the bud. Yessiree.


My journey toward becoming a non-smoker took another couple of decades. Time spent trying different methods of quitting, making promises to myself - swiftly broken promises. As I reflected on the recent news delivered by a no-nonsense Doc, I wished for the umpteenth time that I'd never started smoking.

You have tried to quit a few times. Or maybe many times. It does not matter. What is important is that it hasn't worked. Even more important is that you are reading these words now, which means that you haven't lost faith.

Pregnancy presents enough challenges as it is, there are any number of potential problems. 2. You are fearful about quitting so you look for any excuse to continue. You may argue that the stress of quitting will be worse than smoking for your baby. That is just an excuse, it is simply not true. It's a load of rubbish. You may have already had a child and you smoked, or a friend smoked and their child is OK.


The question is, how will you, ever know what that child would have been like if you hadn't smoked, or perhaps it was just dumb luck that they arrived intact.


3. You are just plain stupid and pig ignorant. As I wrote this article I was angry having recently seen a newborn whose mother smoked. The effect was devastating and life long for this poor child. I had no intention of writing a soft gently convincing argument for quitting.


In the first two instances you can get help and by using hypnosis you will conquer smoking for good, sparing your child and yourself the terrible effects of smoking. In the third instance, good luck, I can only assume that if this is you, you won't bother to read this article anyway.
