Free Yourself From Smoking

"Who said it could not be done? And what great victories has he to his credit, which qualify him to judge others accurately?" Napoleon Hill

Even though much has been said about the hazards of smoking, I still believe that in the foreseeable future we will continue finding out new details on what effects tobacco smoke, including the second-hand one, has on our health. Our descendants actually will be wondering in awe how humanity was gradually killing itself with the self-imposed addiction, costing it millions of lives and trillions of dollars.

The World Health Organization estimates that 100 million people in the world died from smoking-related illnesses in 20th century, at the current rate of around 6 million people per year. Just think of it: 6 million! That's almost the population of Bulgaria or Rio de Janeiro, if you like, being wiped out in a year from the smoking plaque. Every year. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tobacco use causes more deaths in the world on the yearly basis than AIDS (1.9 mln), alcohol (2.5 mln) and suicides (1 mln) combined together. Tobacco claimed more lives in the 20th century than both of the devastating world wars, WW I - 20 mln, WW II - 55 mln. Every six seconds "another one bites the dust" due to effects of the tobacco, and the smoking-related illnesses claim one out 10 adult deaths globally. If the trend continues, up to 1 billion people will fall victims to this epidemics in the 21st century.

There are more than 4000 chemical substances in the cigarette smoke; at least 50 of them are known to cause cancer. The list is quite extensive, but let me just say that it includes arsenic that is used in rat poisons, DDT that is a banned insecticide, Formaldehyde that is used to preserve dead specimen, and the list continues in this manner. All of them go directly to your blood and hence saturate every cell of your body when you inhale cigarette smoke.

My goal today is not to scare you with the lethal effects of smoking and make you quit because of the fear of slow and painful death. Even though that lots of extensive research shows that an average smoker lives 10-20 years shorter than an average person who doesn't smoke, you most probably wouldn't care about this, as it is always just a probability and never 100%. As experience shows, the method of fear of remote punishment simply doesn't work. If it did, most of the people would become non-smokers the moment they saw the health warnings on the packs (like "Smoking causes impotence"). If somebody told you, "If you don't stop smoking now, you will be decapitated in 1 week," you would have much higher chances of finding inner strength to get rid of this addiction.

My aim is to help you make the greatest decision in your smoking life - free yourself from smoking so that you greatly improve the quality of your life today and tomorrow.

Allen Carr, one of the most successful authors on the matter of quitting smoking, said in his bestseller Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking "However, you cannot force smokers to stop, and although all smokers secretly want to, until they are ready to do so a pact just creates additional pressure, which increases their desire to smoke. This turns them into secret smokers, which further increases the feeling of dependency."

I agree that to make this greatly important change in your life, you have to be ready for it. All of the smokers know well how effective the pleas of their non-smoking spouses, parents, or friends are in helping them quit. The reason for failure comes from the fact that you're simply not ready. You are hearing but you are not listening, you are watching but you are not seeing. You are not ready psychologically. Ceasing smoking requires courage and definiteness of decision. You fear that you will not endure and be perceived lacking in will-power by your relatives, friends, and colleagues. You fear to fail as you have probably failed already several times before. That's number one reason for not being ready. Number two, in my opinion, is that you are not motivated enough. You can't leave the comfort zone of your daily routine because you don't see the higher purpose for which to do it. When you are 20-25, it may seem to you the same whether to live 70 or 85 years (both are dinosaur ages anyway), but as you progress through life and start noticing how fast the bells toll, you become aware of the preciousness of every moment here. But still, you may spend 15 or 20 years smoking before ceasing (if you will cease at all), because of lack of proper motivation. A possibility of a lung or mouth cancer at 65 seems so distant to us when we are 25, that it doesn't serve as a strong enough impetus for stopping.

See it yourself that there is nothing cool about smoking. It's a disgusting process that is poisoning your organism and the air around you, exposing to high risk not only the health of your own but also of the people dearest to you. The perceived trendiness of smoking has been carefully planted into your mind by many years of excessive advertising and product placement with substantial marketing budgets ($15 bln only in the US in 2003). You have to understand that the images of happy young smiling ladies and "real men" have been created to induce you to buy that particular brand. If you doubt that, look at a lady with 20+ years of smoking experience... listen to the timber of her voice... see the color and texture of her skin... feel the smell of her hair. Or, think of Wayne McLaren, David McLean and Dick Hammer - the three men that appeared in famous brand advertisements with a cowboy- who all died from lung cancer in the 90's. Wayne McLaren, for example, did not see his 52nd birthday. He had been a pack-and-a-half-a-day smoker for over 25 years...

So, smoking is an outdated addiction, the only purpose of which is to deliver nicotine to the body of the smoker. This is the only actual reason for you to smoke. Your cells start craving for nicotine the moment its level starts dropping. Everything else is the alibis that your creative mind makes up in order to justify the regular intake of this highly-addictive substance. There is nothing sexy about smoking. It makes you stink as a dozen ashtrays, carries discomfort to your beloved ones; costs you plenty of money (an average a pack-a-day smoker in Europe will spend more than 15000 EUR on cigarettes alone in the next 10 years of their life, calculated at current medium prices for a pack), reduces your energy level, diminishes your sexuality, decreases your productivity, steals your health, and, eventually, takes your life.

It's never late to stop smoking. No matter how many years of experience you have - 1 or 30 - you can do yourself a great benefit by simply quitting smoking today. Within just 1 year after ceasing smoking, your excess risk of coronary heart disease, heart attack and stroke will have dropped to less than half that of a smoker, and within 10 years, your risk of being diagnosed with lung cancer will be between 30% and 50% of a normal smoker and your risk of getting pancreatic cancer will have dropped to the level of a non-smoker [1].

The inspiration for quitting smoking should come not because of awful consequences in the form of slow and painful death (even though that could definitely be a trigger for starting to think in that direction), but in the quality of life now. And the life of a smoker stinks... both literally and figuratively speaking. You know it better than I do.

The hard feeling in the chest, the frequent dryness in the mouth, the stench in the whole body, the never-ending coughing, the regular catching of cold or flu, the general fatigue from head to toes, the constant thinking about cigarettes, the panic when being out of cigarettes, the crazy amount of money being spent on the same cigarettes even on a monthly basis, not to mention annually... If you don't have these symptoms yet, you will acquire them soon - with more experience in smoking. And what do you get in return? The short-lasting feeling of pleasure which is actually lack of discomfort that you start getting once nicotine level in your blood drops.

Why do you smoke? Think of it objectively, put all pros and cons and see which side wins the battle. If you are honest with yourself, the amount of supporting facts will be countable on the fingers of one hand in the best case, and the opposition will be more than abundant.

You can quit smoking. It's not that hard. Trust me, I'm speaking from experience. It's not so easy. It's challenging. But it's not that hard. It's nothing an average person couldn't do.

As Napoleon Hill, the father of the contemporary success philosophy, said, "You can always become the person you would have liked to be." His even more famous words from the Law of Success are "You can do it, if you believe you can." Ceasing smoking requires definiteness of decision and decisiveness for achievement. Stopping smoking will be one of the greatest achievements in your life so far. It will be one of the most important lessons in conquering yourself.

Do you want to do it? How bad do you want it? The moment your desire for stopping cigarettes becomes an obsession so great you can't think of anything else, you will be truly unstoppable. Nothing in the world can make you light up again. And it's because you will have known how wonderful life is without nicotine.

You will begin noticing the different notes of floral smells. You will start breathing again with no hardships or strange sounds. Your whole body will feel fit, elevated, and in a good shape. People will start noticing the change that will have happened in you. They will be wondering what special skin pealing procedures you are taking and what sports you are practicing as all of a sudden you will look at least 10 years younger. Your general energy level will be so much boosted and you will feel ecstatic most of the time. You will be more productive. In a flash, you will turn into the work annihilator: any amount of work will be easily consumed as you will have so much more time to concentrate on it. This will not be left unnoticed. Your employer will be pleasantly surprised and your colleagues will be wondering what the hell is "wrong" with you.

Except for the first several weeks of nicotine-addiction struggle on the chemical level, you will free your mind from the thoughts about cigarettes. When you are smoker, it rarely happens that you don't think about cigarettes. It's either about wanting them, or when smoking them, or after having too much of them. Imagine, how much more time you will have to think about matters that are important for your well-being in both short and long term: your true desires, your goals that come from them, your plans for achieving them, your actions for realizing them.

The amount of time that you will have acquired from simply not smoking will add between 2-3 hours daily, if you are a pack-a-day smoker now. Imagine if you invest this time in reading literature in your field of occupation. This will amount to 10-15 hours weekly, and between 40 and 60 hours monthly! You can get an online master's degree in just a year, or become a leading expert in your field in 2-3 years. Imagine the added value of financial gains from this, not to mention the feeling of happiness you may enjoy!

Life without cigarettes is truly wonderful! With all the health benefits and the prospects for a longer and happier time on earth, stopping smoking is giving you even more. It sets you free to invest time and money in yourself, choose your definite path in life, plan your steps in it, engage in activities that will shape your destiny, and achieve success in your chosen field. Life without cigarettes is superior in both quality and quantity. To me it sounds like a great combination; do you agree?

Why It Is Hard For a Smoker To Quit Smoking

It may not be easy for a smoker, especially for a chain smoker to quit smoking. This article aims to help them by giving useful information on how to do it. There are few options out there that you can do to quit smoking. But first, you have to concentrate on what you are up against- the negative effects of smoking and the harm that it brings to you- and the benefits you will get after successfully overcoming the addiction. When you are ready doing it, you will be guided with basic information you need to know about quitting.

Stopping yourself from smoking, also known as "smoking cessation", is the most important step if you want to have a longer life and healthy body. It may be hard, but if you are much willing, you can surely do it. Once you have quitted, you really have to stay quit. Now, you may be wondering why you are finding it too hard to quit smoking. That is because of the presence of nicotine. Nicotine is naturally present in tobacco or cigarettes that you are hitting. It is a very addictive drug just like cocaine or heroin. When you intake nicotine continuously and regularly, your body will become dependent on it, as well as your emotional and mental status.

When you smoke, nicotine goes deep into the lungs and then quickly flows into the bloodstream. It is carried through all over your body affecting all the parts of it. That is why smoking is very dangerous mostly for pregnant women or women who breastfeed their babies. Nicotine is mixed with the breast milk causing danger even to the baby. The reason why nicotine becomes addictive keeping you from quitting is that it gives a pleasant feeling to the smoker. This drug is a depressant which calms the nerve cells when a smoker is nervous or tensed.

When the smoker stops, the level of nicotine in the body of the smoker drops low until the pleasant feeling it brought while he was still taking it disappears. That's the time the smoker will desire to take more of it. To bring back the pleasant feeling it gives. It becomes a cycle. The nicotine in the body will continuously flow because of this cycle. That is the reason why smokers, especially the chain smokers find it hard to quit smoking. When they start quitting, these individuals will have to overcome the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Once Again Here Is How to Quit Smoking

Smoking is a vice that a lot of people practice in the society. Given all the pressures and the stresses that they encounter each day, smoking somehow gives them the feeling of relaxation and ease. The bothering thing about smoking is the health risks that it brings. Smoking causes the deterioration of a person's health, and it can cause a lot of long-term effects, in addition to that, the really grave effects of smoking would come to haunt a smoker after ten to twenty years. That is why it is really recommended for a person to quit smoking while it is still early.

How does one quit smoking? Well, first of all, one has to really be determined to quit the habit. It is best that one should enumerate at least 10 reasons why he/she is quitting and keep repeating that every day. It may be because of someone like family or friends, or it can be because of one's health awareness and the desire to protect his/her health. Just find the inspiration to quit. The thing with quitting is that if one cannot instantly stop because of the cravings, it is suggested that one should only buy a few packets or sticks than what he/she usually gets, or smoke not as much as the usual and the number should deteriorate as time passes.

It is also good to see a behavioral therapist in order for one to find someone to confide with if quitting gets emotionally distressing. It is also good to find some healthy alternatives; for example, if smoking helps one relieve stress, then one should find another activity to relieve stress such as playing tennis or working out.

It may be difficult to stop because it has become a habit in one's life, but with the right determination and inspiration, it will not be impossible. For longtime smokers, it may take a really long time to quit, it just does not happen all in one day. For some, it may take months or even years. It is important that one should be patient when one decides to quit. It may be long until one has fully quit smoking, and then one can finally live a healthy lifestyle. The sense of fulfillment and fortification is indeed very rewarding after quitting, and one will never turn to smoking again. After supposedly quitting, it is important that one should maintain that all the rest of his/her life.

Why Can't They Quit Smoking?

Over and over again, through different forms of advertising media, quitting smoking is heavily encouraged in most countries around the world. The bad effects of smoking are widely taught to all citizens of many nations and yet, one out of five people all over the world are still cigarette smokers who just can't quit smoking. What's there in that little harmless looking cigarette stick that can make a person choose it over the chance for a longer life? The answers are as follows:

1. Nicotine

Nicotine is an addictive substance found in cigarettes. Nicotine is in fact nearly as addictive as the dangerous substances heroin and cocaine. From the cigarette stick, this substance is inhaled and then it passes through the respiratory tract and into the lungs from which it becomes absorbed into the body's bloodstream. The bloodstream travels throughout the body and so will the nicotine, which will then be absorbed by the body's cells, especially by the brain cells. From there, the good physical and psychological feelings will start to emerge as the nicotine affects the brain.

The body will also start to feel stimulated and then depressed. The heart rate will increase, the body's energy will rise and the pleasure center activates. Afterwards, the body will feel exhausted and the feeling of depression comes after. This will make the person want another dose of nicotine so he'll puff another stick of cigarette and same thing happens. And that explains nicotine addiction in cigarette smoking.

2. It's in the genes

If many of those who make up a person's family tree are described to be non-quitter smokers, then there's a very high chance that that person will also be the same. Studies done by scientists have shown that the genes of smokers who got rid of the smoking habit do not share with those of the ones who didn't or can't seem to stop smoking. That means that if a smoker got parents who are non-quitter smokers, his genes won't be helpful in making him quit smoking. The results of this study may be a long way from being certain when it comes to the relation of the genes to the person's ability to stop smoking but it's definitely a step closer to finally determining it.

3. Social advantages of smoking

Many social groups still think that smoking is a cool activity. Moreover, if one gets into a group of smoking people who he thinks is awesome, or maybe important, the situation will push him to smoke also so he'd be a part of that social circle. And as he becomes a part of it already, having to quit smoking might mean slashing himself out of that group.

The Definite Reason To Why You Should Quit Smoking

Smoking has been a habit since 5000 BC. From then on, people have found smoking a vice difficult to quit because of the benefits they seem to enjoy. While smoking has actually been helpful to a lot of people in alleviating stress in the most pressured moments, the health risks are really deadly. In fact, these health risks are more than enough reasons why one should just quit smoking instead of continuing it despite the vice being hard to resist.

According to research, there are over 500,000 deaths that are recorded in a year in the United States which point out smoking-related diseases as the cause; furthermore, smoking even actually shortens the life span of the average person by about 13.2 to 14.5 years. A recent study also shows that the male population of China has a much shorter life expectancy because of smoking than their counterparts in countries where there are fewer smokers; in fact, it has been derived from studies that almost half of lifelong smokers would have deaths correlated to smoking.

Smoking also increases the risk of having a heart disease. The difference is so huge that even after years of quitting smoking, the risk does not decrease that much to equal the risk of those who have not smoked in their lifetime. It has also been discovered that smoking increases the chances of having Parkinson's disease, and it also worsens the symptoms of Crohn's disease.

What is also terrible about smoking is that it is not only the smoker whose body is harmed, but also those who inhale the smoke exhaled by the smokers. These people are called second-hand smokers, and their health risks are even more terrible. Those are just some of the many reasons. Generally speaking, to avoid killing one's self and harming other people, it is best that one should just quit smoking.

Even though these smokers are fully aware of the health risks, they still find it hard to quit. This may be because of the fact that smoking is a vice to that person, and the emotional and psychological distresses that one has undergone could really tempt the person to smoke. It may be hard to fully quit, but it is important that one seek the inspiration to finally let go of that cigarette and live a healthier lifestyle for the rest of the person's life. One should just quit smoking if he values his life or it may all be too late.

How To Beat Weight When You Quit Smoking

A lot of smokers know that smoking stifles the appetite and may assist with weight loss or weight maintenance. It is precisely for this reason that a lot of image-conscious smokers carry on smoking, even though they do wish to quit. But, is it a given that if one quits smoking one would gain weight? Absolutely not. Not everyone who stops smoking will gain weight. Even those who have the propensity to bulge don't have to, either. There are ways to quit smoking and not gain weight.

Besides the fact that nicotine boosts the appetite, and therefore stopping it decreases the appetite, that's not the only reason why some ex-smokers put on a few pounds. When some people kick the habit they just substitute it eating for smoking. So, there you go. All is not as bad as it initially seems, at face value. There are things you can do to ensure successfully quitting and keeping your body.

Hydration

Drinking plenty of water has long been known to be one way to help keep your weight in check. For a start, water is calorie-free, and sips of water with meals may help fill you up quicker, and averts overeating. Hydration also helps re-condition the skin after all the damage from smoking.

Healthy eating

Eating healthy, not just for ex-smokers, is an excellent way of getting sufficient nutrients into your body, without piling on the unwanted ponds. If one watched one's snacking habits and chose healthier snack options over the sugary and fatty versions, half the battle is won. Fruits and vegetables make very good snacks, as they generally are nutrient rich, with few calories. One good tip is to have numerous smaller meals rather than, say three large meals. This is the mainstay of a lot of weight loss programs.

Increase physical activity

Physical activity will help to burn up the extra unneeded calories, thereby maintaining your weight, or even aiding weight loss. This goes hand in hand with healthy eating. After all, they do say that the most sure way to trim the fat is to eat less and move more. After quitting smoking your lung function and health will improve, further increasing your capacity for exercise. The more physical activity you do the more calories you burn. Increasing physical activity does not mean joining the gym. Simple activities like walking, jogging, swimming and dancing work wonders in controlling weight gain.

Avoid habits conducive to weight gain

Don't fall into the trap of getting rid of one bad habit and replacing it with another. One problem that ex-smokers may face is boredom and comfort eating, which often involves eating the wrong kinds of foods. For example, some people indulge in chocolate or junk food, which ultimately lead to weight gain. other habits to avoid include spending countless sedentary hours playing video games. Spend more time doing things conducive to good general well-being.

From the above discussion, it is quite obvious that it is not the lack of nicotine, per se, which leads to weight problems. Did you know that there are a lot of overweight, nicotine-inhaling smokers out there? I bet you know someone who smokes, but still struggles with their weight. Smoking is, therefore, not the answer to the bulge. Healthy living is. You can quit smoking and not pile on the pounds. Take action and stay smoke-free, with the many ways to quit smoking.

The Best Tip to Help You Withdraw From Smoking: Believe

Tips to quit smoking are at best guides and not a clear-cut solution to the problem. You don't simply do what these tips suggest and expect a miracle to take place. You are guided by these tips just to assist you. And, the biggest part of the solution (and the most important) seems to belong to you or should be present in you when you begin the process. Without it, the desired change is doomed not to happen. Let us start with this very important item.

Believe: Strategy that Really Matters

They say that once you get yourself into drugs, there is no way you can be completely free of its influence. In other words, you will have the battle with the temptation for the rest of your life. That seems to imply that you cannot achieve the total control over such a vice.

Smoking cigarette is reportedly a different case. There are reports of successful stopping. There are even reports of effortless quitting - the kind that is quit today, quit forever. If that happens to you, then you are very lucky. But if it does not, then you have to BELIEVE.

There is nothing more influencing than believing in yourself. That is greater than soliciting the support of your friends and relatives or substituting other activities in lieu of smoking. Chewing something sweet or puffing on counterfeit cigarettes may bring temporary relief but either of this method is only evasive but not curative. The habit has to be faced squarely. Believing in yourself can stand alone because it encompasses every other tip that was ever suggested. In fact, other tips are useless without belief.

Other Quit-Smoking Tips

These tips are also important. Choose the ones that will work with you well.

a) Write the reasons why you are quitting. Remind yourself of these reasons by reading this list.

b) Enlist the support of people who care for you.

c) Exercise, exercise and exercise. Get that needed volume of oxygen to circulate freely within your system. Exercise exhaustively.

d) Free your teeth from obnoxious cigarette chemicals. If these chemicals stick longer near your taste and your nose, the temptation is greater.

e) Flush out nicotine by drinking lots of water.

f) Get away from those familiar places and faces.

g) Get all those vices off you altogether. There is no reason for you to continue drinking alcohol or do drugs if you really are decided to stop smoking.

Finally, should you feel tempted to break your resolve to quit smoking, think about "believe."

These programs provide self-help books, conduct counseling, clinic visits and other kinds of activities aimed to help the patients on quitting smoking.

The American Lung Association is also working with the other organizations to add strength to the laws that protect the people from the harm of secondhand smoke as well as policies that prevent the youth from being addicted to smoking.

3. Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights (ANR)

ANR is a national organization focused on enforcing and protecting the rights of nonsmokers. Their mission, aside from the protection of nonsmokers from secondhand smoke, also consists of preventing tobacco addiction among the young people. The organization has started enacting the legislations concerning the protection of nonsmokers from their workplace and other public spaces.

4. Tobacco Technical Assistance Consortium (TTAC)

TTAC is a US organization dedicated to providing assistance to other organizations that implements effective programs on tobacco control. They provide technical assistance, give out useful products, tools and other equipment, and also conduct trainings to help make the tobacco control program's efforts on assisting people to quit smoking successful.

Ten Different Ways You Can Use to Quit Smoking

Quitting smoking is one of the hardest challenges that you will have to face if you have been smoking for years, but it is something that you need to do if you ever want to live a healthy life. So to help you out here are 10 ways that you can use to quit smoking.

1. Exercise - Clinical studies have shown that people who exercise are less likely to crave a cigarette as compared to sedentary people.

2. Eat Healthy - Withdrawal symptoms due to your abrupt decline of nicotine intake can actually be countered by eating healthy foods and keeping yourself fit.

3. Stop Cold Turkey - Though this is the most difficult way to stop smoking, if you can manage to not smoke for the first week, despite the withdrawal symptoms, you will be able to stop smoking for good.

4. Look for Cigarette Alternatives - Some people find that chewing gum when they get a hankering for a cigarette actually helps. Or you can try using a fake cigarette to condition your brain to stop its nicotine dependency.

5. Using Prescription Drugs - There are prescription medication like Varenicline that reduces your craving for cigarettes and also diminishes the good feeling you get while smoking; but this option is only for extremely heavy smokers.

6. Nicotine Replacement Therapy - This is the most common method that people use to quit smoking. There are gums, patches, and sprays that provide your body with small amounts of nicotine, making it easier to wean yourself from cigarettes.

7. Join a Support Group - It really helps if you can talk with people who have been through the same things that you are going through. They can help you get enough motivation to see things through.

8. Avoid Smokers - Nothing can get you back on the bandwagon again than getting tempted to smoke again by the people around you. If you have friends who smoke, ask them if they could not smoke in front of you; and most importantly beg them to stop tempting you!

9. Set a Date for When You Will Permanently Quit - By giving yourself a deadline you are giving yourself a goal to reach for, making you more motivated to quit the habit.

10. Be Happy - The most common reason for people wanting to smoke is due to stress. So try to relax and free your mind from worries every once in a while so you can quit smoking for good.

Wake Up and Breathe: Stop Smoking Part Two

Why do people start smoking in the first place? In Irene Glasser's thought-provoking book, Anthropology of Addictions and Recovery, she writes that in view of a 50% reduction in cigarette smoking in the U.S.(since 1965), tobacco companies are "searching for inventive ways to recruit new smokers." Their marketing strategies have focused on target groups: those most susceptible to beginning to smoke or those most likely to maintain the smoking habit. Impressionable youth, the homeless, and people who have been diagnosed with a mental illness are the object of considerable targeted marketing. I have firsthand knowledge that kids are eager participants of smoking. Fitting in, feeling a part of, and having something to do are all motivations to start smoking for kids. Glasser directs us to the advocacy group Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids for more information about tobacco marketing methods aimed at kids, preventative action opportunities, U.S. and worldwide statistics and current legislation.

When I began smoking it was still perceived as a sophisticated activity, complete with fancy cigarette holders and lighters, glamorously depicted on television and in the movies. It was the glory days of The Marlboro Man and commercials with young people having lots of fun by clear mountain streams smoking Kool or Salem - one of the popular menthol brands.

Although the Surgeon General's warning was a rather tepid "Smoking may be hazardous to your health" when I started, I didn't pay much heed through the following years as the warnings became more extreme.
Thinking a "clean x-ray" was indicative of good lung heath was a mistaken notion on my part. A PFT (pulmonary function test) is required to assess the damage. Breathing is a precious commodity and I've had to teach myself how to do it more effectively as a result. There are a variety of breathing exercises that help us learn to breathe our way to improved health and reduce stress. Two options are called Diaphragmatic Breathing and Pursed Lip Breathing and when used in conjunction with specific sitting, standing and sleeping positions, these methods help reduce shortness of breath.

The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute launched the Breathe Better Network in 2007 and a national campaign, COPD Learn More Breathe Better® has grown to more than 70 members in 47 states. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the 3rd leading cause of death in the US with 12 million currently diagnosed as having COPD and it is estimated just as many don't know they have the disease.

The American Lung Association provides the staggering statistics on preventable deaths in our country and states "... Tragically, each day thousands of kids still pick up a cigarette for the first time. The cycle of addiction, illness and death continues."

We have to wake up to the reality that smoking offers no redeeming qualities. Whatever short term gain we may think we realize is NOT worth the years we cut off our life.

Quitting Smoking - Insanity And Restaurant Dining

As a non smoker one of the great mysteries is how someone can eat a fine meal and ruin it with a cigarette. Instead of savouring the taste of delicious food the only taste lingering on the tongue is the burnt cigarette after taste.

Recently my wife and I had dinner with three friends. After each course they all went outside for a cigarette. I watched them join other smokers and bond in the ritual of inhaling smoke and poisonous chemicals while freezing in the cold night air.

When they returned to the table they brought with them the stink of smoke. That was off putting enough but the thought of willingly inhaling the pollution seemed like madness.

Insanity has been defined as doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome. Everyone who smokes in a western country has seen and heard enough to know clearly what the consequences of smoking will be for them.

Yet it still surprises me so many people continue to smoke while either denying any problem exists or with no concern about the future. Some even think that the whole health scare is just a government plot of some kind.

If you are thinking like this then its time to great real or get some psychological help. I'm not here to be your friend, I'm here to encourage you to face the facts and save your own life.

Food tastes worse with smoking, alcohol, coffee and tea taste worse with smoking, you know that really, because no restaurant on the planet smokes their food with cigarette smoke. Because no one would be crazy enough to pay for it.

Look at your life, look at the areas in which you are doing well, making good decisions. What about your relationships, are they good or at least functional? Do you interact like a rational human being, do you behave well in public?

If so why are you acting insanely by continuing to smoke? You are not insane, you know the problems with smoking, so ignoring them is crazy, but again you are nor insane so you know that you need to quit smoking.

You can do it, using hypnosis you can come to terms with the reality of smoking, you can release your habitual connections and you can finally be free from the control of nicotine. So set your fear aside and take action.

And now for more free info on how to easily and quickly quit cigarettes Ian Newton invites you to go to http://www.60minutestoquitsmoking.com/

Wishing you the best of health

Why It Is Good to Quit Smoking

Doctors and health advocates have advised the public enough for them to know that cigarette smoking is the root of many health evils. A lot of studies have been done and both the government and private organizations have collaborated to support individuals who want to quit smoking.

Many have recognized that they are fighting a battle that has already deepened its roots within an individual. Thus, the existence of support groups and organizations that aims to guide and encourage an individual to pursue the process of erasing the habit.

In spite of the difficulty of "unhooking" oneself from the chains of nicotine addiction, change must always start from within. Being informed of the benefits of quitting can boost an individual's motivation for taking up a healthier lifestyle.

Below are some reasons why you should quit smoking for good.

You live longer

One study revealed that at a certain point in time, 80% of the population reaches the age of 70 years old. Unfortunately, only about 50% of smokers in that group survive such a long age.

You reduce the risk of dying in pain

Studies have shown that within 5 years of quitting, there is a risk reduction of lung cancer by 21% but an excess risk up to 30 years is still retained. So, decide that when you quit, you quit for good. In addition, going smoke-free significantly lowers the risk of atherosclerosis and heart attack especially in patients above 45 years old.

It improves your appearance and your smell

Cigarette smoke is known to irritate the oral mucosa, throat, and tongue. That's why smokers often get darkened lips and a discolored mouth tongues. The smoke also irritates the skin, and clings to the body, just like what regular smoke does. Except that the smell leaves a distinct odor not popular with a lot of people. Individuals who have kicked the habit later discover they have clearer complexion, healthier hair, and fresher body odor due to decreased smoke exposure.

You're helping to save the environment

Reduced air pollution, cigarette butts and paper production - all of these are helpful to the environment.
It saves a lot of money

Cigarettes are definitely not a necessity. When you buy a cigarette and keep an equivalent amount every time you shop for these packs, you will be surprised at the amount you are spending for such poisons. So, if there's a practical reason to quit smoking, it is to save money for something more worthwhile.

Stop Smoking Forever, 6 Free Tips That Make You Forget About Smoking

We all know that there are many different methods to stop smoking, some a lot more effective than the others. This article is about stopping smoking all by yourself. Whether you have tried before or you are doing so now for the first time, the following techniques makes it both simple and easy.

Now, there are two myths about smoking that I would like to see disappear in a puff of smoke before we get to the 'how to' part of this article. The first is that some smokers put off the idea of stopping smoking thinking that they need to be fully committed to the idea of stopping and totally willing. Well, that is just not true. Most people wanting to stop smoking also feel that another part of them wants to continue, or still enjoys it, or is scared about the idea of stopping. The good news is that as long as the part of you that wants to stop is more motivated than the part that still enjoys it, then you can have success.

Secondly, there seem to be a lot of 'good advice' out there about willpower that can help you to stop. Although some will-power is needed to take the initial steps towards becoming a non-smoker, applying too much of your will-power and pushing too hard to never smoke again, will have exactly the opposite effect. Instead, follow the top tips below and surprise yourself at just how easy it can be to relax creatively into the new non-smoking you.

Please note that the more you actively carry out and engage with the tips below, the more you increase your chance of success. Good luck!

1. Be clear about your reasons for wanting to stop.

Create a list with your reasons for wanting to stop smoking. What will the benefits be? List all the things that you dislike about smoking or the things that you are fed up with that relates to smoking. This could potentially include things such as the smell, putting yourself out socially as a result, the cost involved, the negative effects on your body, etc.

2. Set a date and commit to it.

Once you know when you want to stop, you can start to organise yourself to get your head around the idea of stopping. There are many things that you could do. Why not share your experience with a friend and ask for their support?

3. Visualise.

It will be well worth your while if you practice to see yourself as a non-smoker. Remember that if you can see yourself as a non-smoker, then you are a non-smoker! Twice per day for the first three weeks, sit quietly for a few moments, relax the muscles within your body for a while, focus on your breathing and being calm. Then pretend that you find yourself in all the places/scenarios where you used to smoke, but this time imagine that you are a non-smoker with calm and relax hands. Imagine yourself breathing freely and easily.

4. Expect to feel uncomfortable.

You will be happy to know that cravings do not last. If you have a craving, find the balance between trying to ignore the discomfort and talking/focussing on it too much. Instead, be aware of the discomfort and turn it to your advantage by using the excess energy to exercise or enjoy a favourite hobby. Or you can simply distract yourself.

5. Take it one day at a time.

Instead of thinking that you might never smoke again, tell yourself that you are only not going to smoke for one day. Then do another day and another, until you have done your first week.

6. Deal with cravings by substitution.

Whenever you find yourself having a craving, give yourself something to do. This can include anything that is healthy, from drinking water to exercise.

Remember, you did not always believe that you were a smoker, but you still believe it at the moment. NOW, you can reverse this believe again and start to believe that you can again become the non-smoker that you have been before.

Simple Tips on How You Can Quit Smoking

You can ask any person who has successfully quit smoking if they had an easy time doing so and they will all tell you that it is no picnic. Non-smokers can be quite judgmental when they say that you can just simply stop smoking and be done with it, there is more to it than that. Smokers do know that there is nothing good that comes from smoking cigarettes, but they just cannot help themselves, they are already hooked. You cannot just flip a switch and suddenly not crave cigarettes anymore; it takes time and a whole lot of discipline to stop smoking.

If you are trying to quit smoking and you are having a rather hard time doing so, then here are a couple of suggestions that may be able to kick the habit for good:

Join a Support Group

If you are the only smoker in your family, odds are you will not get any helpful advice from any of them. They may mean well, but they will sound very judgmental and will only make you want to smoke more. By joining a support group of struggling and recovered smokers you can get real advice from people who know exactly what you are going through because they went through the same experiences as well.

And since they know just how hard quitting smoking is they have a lot of advice that they can share with you to somehow make things a bit easier.

Wean Yourself Gradually from Cigarettes

Some people may say that the easiest way to stop smoking is to just quit cold turkey, but that is not necessarily true. If you abruptly just stop smoking the withdrawal symptoms would come rushing in all at once, and in full force; sometimes the symptoms would be so severe that you will swear that you are losing your mind. The real best way to stop smoking is by gradually decreasing the amount of cigarettes you are smoking a day, right until you can comfortably stop smoking altogether. Doing it this way will lessen the effects of the withdrawal symptoms and make it easier for you to stop.

Hopefully these tips can somehow ease the burden when you're trying to quit smoking. It can be really difficult at first, but if you can just manage to fight temptation and your own urges to smoke during the first few weeks then you are well on your way to recovery.

5 Ways How Acupuncture Helps Smoking

For some people, quitting smoking is as easy as one, two, and three. But for others, it takes lots of time and effort, and sometimes money. There are alternative therapies however, that are proven to help a person quit smoking at no or less risk, such as acupuncture.

Acupuncture and smoking sounds bizarre right? Well, you might want to give it a try first. Anyway, there's nothing wrong it. It's a healthy, risk-free therapy that will benefit you. How will acupuncture help you quit smoking?

1. It lowers down stress levels that trigger smoking. The calming effect of acupuncture makes it easier for people to quit smoking. Acupuncture stimulates the production of endorphins or the 'feel good' chemicals in the brain that are responsible for the feeling of happiness. Some people, who are in a state of severe stress, often find comfort in smoking. Just one session of acupuncture can make a significant reduction in your stress levels.

2. It alleviates withdrawal symptoms. Some smokers have the full determination to quit but find it hard to cope with the difficulties that come with the withdrawal symptoms. Acupuncture is scientifically proven to be effective in addressing chronic pain issues and other mental disorders including depression and anxiety. If you're currently in the smoking cessation process, you will benefit from undergoing acupuncture. It also
alleviates agitation, nervousness, and other signs of mental distress.

3. It helps lower down the smoking intervals. Smokers who have went through acupuncture treatments significantly reduced the number of times they smoke, a study reveal.

4. It's a great complimentary treatment for quitting smoking. There are smoking cessation drugs that don't do well with other medications. Being a natural treatment, you can use acupuncture in conjunction with your present smoking cessation treatment.

5. It's for all ages. Whether you're a teenager, a working professional, or an adult in late 50s, you will benefit from acupuncture. It's a safe therapy that will work for anyone.

Yes, acupuncture will not only assist you in quitting smoking, it can also help you recover from the negative effects of tobacco use. The liver for instance, greatly benefits from this alternative therapy. Our liver has a tendency to become heavily dependent on smoking that it chases the harmful chemicals from tobacco. And with these chemicals, the liver starts to malfunction. Acupuncture has a restorative effect in our body organs. It restores the flow of energy in your body, improves blood circulation, and makes you feel well.

Nicotine addiction is something you can't easily crack and get rid of. It takes more than any nicotine replacement products and a strong will power. Quitting is long and difficult process and not every smoker is capable enough to fight the urge and cravings of nicotine addiction. Prevention is still the best medicine.

The Withdrawals of Quitting Smoking

If you can quit smoking, then you will be doing yourself a favor because this will save you from the unhealthful effects incurred from smoking. It is a healthful lifestyle choice to stop the habit, but you should also be aware of the withdrawal effects that will occur after some time. You will feel these symptoms at the first few weeks after you quit smoking. This timeframe is crucial because this will determine whether you can keep abstained from it.

Physical Withdrawal Symptoms:

Weight Gain
Sweating
Headache
Nausea
Difficulty to Breathe

Mental Withdrawal Symptoms:

Irritability
Anxiety
Stress
Depression

These symptoms happen to almost anyone who just stopped smoking, because your body will be recovering from the damage that smoking has done. If you are fortunate, then you will only experience these for a few weeks; however, there are some cases where these last for months.

How to Handle the Symptoms

1. Keep Yourself Busy

When you are busy doing something non-stress-inducing, then you will be able to avoid the mental symptoms. Just keep doing your hobbies, read books or magazines, listen to relaxing music, squeeze a stress ball, or play with whatever you can get a hold of.

2. Drink Lots of Water

Because you have just stopped smoking, you will need to clean your body of the harmful toxins left behind. Drinking water will help you flush them out and reduce the effects of the symptoms.

3. Start Exercising

When you exercise regularly, you will feel much better because this will also help you clean your system of the toxins. Cardiovascular exercises will help greatly because this will keep your body active.

4. Eat Healthful Food

Fruits and vegetables will help you greatly, because they will fill your body with valuable nutrients and vitamins. Also, choose the kinds of food that are healthful and doesn't have too much fat in them; this will help you avoid gaining weight if that is your concern.

5. Use Nicotine Patches

The cause of your withdrawal symptoms is because you will suddenly lose your dose of nicotine. This can be avoided by using nicotine patches to serve as a substitute for cigarettes; however, do not use too much or else you will develop the addiction for nicotine again. Gradually stop using nicotine patches after it has served your purpose.

In the simplest sense, you should prepare yourself for these symptoms after you quit smoking, because you may find the need to smoke again if you suffer more from the after-effects.

How To Be Your Own Best Friend And Lead A Life That Will Make You Happy

Subjects like this should be discussed more often, as people actually need this kind of information even though they are not aware that they do. For that reason, I will try to give you some practical information that you can use to be your own best friend and stop leading a destructive way of living. Nevertheless, it is a destructive way of living that we follow which makes our life an unhappy one, and sadly enough, we don't even know what is it that we do that makes us feel that way.

That is why following few tips will help you better understand yourself and hopefully help you overcome some of the destructive tendencies and misuse of power of will:

1. First of all, we must understand that we find ourselves in unpleasant situations simply because we attract such situations in our life, and we find ourselves in pleasant situations also because we attract such situations in our life. How? With our own thoughts. Our mind is constantly filled with various thoughts and we are barely aware about 5% of them. By learning to listen to your thoughts more carefully and directing them onto desired subjects, you will also learn how to attract desired situations to your life more easily.

2. Try to be aware about your actions. Are all your actions conscious and the way you want them to be or do you run on autopilot? Most commonly, we are also aware only about 5% of our actions, and the rest is happening without our full awareness. Try to think before you act, and do that all the time. This will slow down your tempo while at the same time allow you to filter through your intentions and see which intentions will bring you good things and which intentions will only hurt others and you.

3. Many times things in our life don't work the way we want them to and honestly, it is 100% our own fault. It was our choices and our way of thinking as well as actions that we didn't take that brought us such situations in our life. But what is done is done and can only be improved from there on.

If you feel that your life doesn't quite work the way you want it to, don't be alarmed but rather realize that you obviously don't think and act in accordance to your desires, which brings you all kinds of stuff that you like and stuff that you don't like. The only thing you can do is to accept the fact that it was you who created such life for yourself and that it is you who have all the power to recreate it the way you want it to.

You shouldn't be afraid of that creative power in you, because you use it all the time, only that you are not aware about it. By being aware about that power, you will be able to think and act in accordance to your deepest desires and create the life that you truly want to see.

Those were just three simple tips you should follow to be your own best friend and lead a life that your heart aces for. There is no use to live in abundance if you don't know how to listen to your heart and don't take proper actions to make your dreams come true.

We have everything we need and we should use that abundance in a positive way to create a beautiful life for ourselves. Remember to think before you act and be aware about your intentions. Only that way you can avoid situations that would bring you sorrow and intentionally go in the situations that will bring you joy. Some Good Old Tips on How to Quit Smoking

People smoke due to different reasons and by the time they quit smoking, the damage to their health has been done. Teens smoke because of peer pressure while adults smoke to relieve stress. Some even use smoking as a form of relaxation. Smoking can create many health complications and it simply won't benefit the smoker. Most smokers actually know what smoking can do to them and that's why some would want to stop this bad habit.

Unfortunately, many people are unsuccessful in doing so due to the cigarette's addictive property. But there are still some who had completely stopped smoking by following these easy tips.

Smoking can only be stopped if the smoker has a positive attitude towards it. Self-confidence is the key here and it is one of the most important things to consider. A smoker who doesn't believe that he/she can actually stop smoking won't be successful at all. Usually, people don't have the self-confidence because they are not determined to stop smoking. A little inspiration is all it takes. It is easy to get inspiration from stories of people who benefited from quitting this vise and most importantly, think about the health issues smoking can give to the person smoking and to the people who are experiencing 2nd hand smoking.

One reason why people can't seem to stop smoking is due to oral desires. So instead of placing a cigarette in the mouth, try drinking water as a substitute. Drinking lots of water will flush down nicotine and other chemicals from cigarettes. It will also substitute the old sensation of smoke filling up the mouth and it can keep the mouth busy. Drinking water alone won't completely stop the urge to smoke but this habit can be done along with serious quit smoking methods.

The chemicals found on cigarettes can stain the teeth and this won't be attractive to anyone at all. It is advisable to immediately get a professional cleaning to whiten those teeth when quitting on cigarettes. This will stop the person from smoking by having the idea of white and attractive teeth. The smoker should always keep in mind that once he/she returns to smoking cigarettes, the money spent on the dentist will just be wasted.

These tips are very helpful facts on how to quit smoking. They are most effective when done together or along with other stop smoking methods. Smokers should quit as early as possible for them to have a better and healthier body.

How to Help Someone to Stop Smoking

If a family member or a friend asks you for help to quit smoking then he has made the most important step in ultimately stopping smoking.Smoking is like having your other leg in the grave; you are ultimately destroying your health and other people's health as well. There are no positive sides to smoking, only illness, bad breath and discolored teeth.

It could be very difficult to avoid smoking and if you are willing to help out then here are ways on how to help someone to stop smoking:

Quitting must be done as soon as possible before the person suffers from irreparable lung damage. Take the person to a doctor to determine his current state of health. His doctor will advice his benefits of quitting smoking and of course suggest the ideal smoking cessation treatment to be done.
There are several therapies used to replace cigarettes. Currently, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have approved 5 kinds of nicotine replacement therapy: nicotine patches, nicotine gum, nasal sprays, inhalers and nicotine lozenges. Talk to a medical professional regarding the ideal cessation therapy to use.
Throw all smoking paraphernalia at home: lighters, matches, cigarettes, etc and place a large no smoking sign plus a poster of the various complications of smoking.
Accompany him as you two indulge in fitness activities like aerobic exercises, weight lifting, basketball, cycling, jogging, swimming and many more. He may experience shortness of breath and some difficulty on the initial days of treatment but it is a guarantee that he will notice a better state of health after several sessions.
Go out but avoid places where he can smoke like pubs places where he can buy cigarettes like convenience stores and areas where he may find friends who smoke like billiard halls, plazas, smoking areas in the office and many more. The more he can resist going to these places, the more he will likely recover and quit smoking for good.
Regularly assess his feelings and attitude about quitting and recovery. This will help assess any need for medical intervention such as withdrawal symptoms and the possibility of going back to smoking after a crisis. Help him deal with anxiety and panic which can also be factors to go back to smoking. Indulge him in relaxation techniques like meditation, reflexology, massages, breathing techniques and many other helpful
A technique on how to help someone to stop smoking is to accompany him as he joins forums, meetings and associations that are made to help quitters quit. You can find groups that can help atop smoking through your doctor. He can advice a support group with an experienced moderator for your friend. He may also advice one-on-one treatment for anxiety, panic attacks and stress that is usually accompanied by smoking.

As your friend or family member fully recovers from the withdrawal signs and symptoms of smoking; he will surely realize what an amazing help you have been. You have not only been his friend but you were a dear friend when he was truly in need.

Smoking in Its Full Power and Why It Is Pointless Not to Quit Smoking

If you can't quit smoking, then you will let yourself be continuously overcome by a senseless desire.

Time and again we've heard stories that relate how quitting smoking is easier said than done. This idea points to the power that is inherent in smoking tobacco - power over human psyche that renders the smoker so powerless over the habit. In spite of these experiences, hopeful calls for people to stop smoking are being trumpeted everywhere with their terrifying slogan: Smoking kills.

Smoking Can Kill but You Probably Won't Quit

That the slogan is true and that cigarette is seemingly the only consumer product that can kill its consumers when used as directed could still be ineffective in convincing a smoking slave to get out of captivity. So you may sometimes tell yourself you just don't want to smoke but the feeling of wanting to smoke still looms. Or, you probably had already claimed that to quit smoking is the easiest task you have ever done, but you had gone through the same ordeal a thousand times! And listen and be warned! Make sure you wouldn't come to that point when you would say "I don't get to smoke. I have to smoke" because it means you will be giving in to the habit's clout. So the safest cigarette is the last one. Make that your last indeed.

Some Tips to Help You Out

Smoking is a habit that can not only affect your relationship with people that matter to you but also destroy your self-esteem. There will always be that gnawing feeling that something is amiss and that can only be corrected by eliminating the habit. It is really pointless to go on with the habit while being subjected to its negative effects. Think about the following strategies.

Believe that you can quit. Then write a list of the things that you would surely do. Make sure that you write down the reason/s why you are choosing to quit. Also, take note of the date you would start saying you are finally free of this habit. Get your friends and family to help you in this decision.

Exercising, especially breathing exercises can help. Breathing in more oxygen can lessen toxicity in the body and help in changing of mindset, experts say.

With these things about this ferocious habit being made clear, there is really no point why anyone should not quit smoking or try this immoral habit at all.

Quit Now!

There are many products and medications to help you stop smoking. First are the nicotine replacement products in the form of gum or a patch. Some people are able to use these products with success. They do not, however, ease the burden of changing habits.

Drugs available include the antidepressant Wellbutrin or Zyban, and a newer product Chantix. Wellbutrin or Zyban helps some people quit, although the way it works is not well understood. Chantix is believed to hit the nicotine receptor sites in the brain and stimulating them and also blocking nicotine from getting to the site. All of these are prescription products and have potential side effects.

There are many habits that are tough to quit. Smoking is one of the toughest! Everyone refers to smoking as an addiction. It does have some addictive properties, but as a former smoker, I believe it is much more of a habit than an addiction. When you quit, you get through the addictive withdrawal in about 5 days, but the habit is another issue.

If you are a smoker, you really want to strive to be fit and healthy, and quitting is the first step.

There are many triggers to lighting a cigarette. Triggers are common. If you get in a car and put the key in the ignition, that is a trigger to fasten your seat belt. The triggers to lighting a cigarette are numerous. Triggers include getting in a car, answering the phone, finishing a meal, having a cup of coffee or glass of alcohol, or a friend coming over. All of these are triggers that make you want to light a cigarette.

Quitting smoking takes a lot of gumption. You must gear up for it, plan for it and expect to battle it for 4 to 6 months. I suggest starting by cutting your cigarette consumption by 1/2 each day. If you are smoking 2 packs or 40 cigarettes a day, on day one smoke only 1 pack or 20 cigarettes. On day 2 you can smoke 1/2 pack or 10 cigarettes and on day 3 you can have 5 cigarettes. Then on day 4, you quit. The first day when you reduce by 1/2 it is not too hard. But days 2 and 3 are harder.

Before you quit, you will want to examine your triggers. Write them down. Decide which ones you can change. For example, you could give up coffee for a couple of weeks and have a soda instead. You will still get your caffeine. You could give up alcohol for several weeks. You could not get together with your friends who are smokers. At the end of each meal, you must immediately get up and do something. You can't just sit there and talk. If you stay preoccupied, it helps. Also, take lots of showers. You will find that while you are in the shower, you will not desire a cigarette. You will probably want to go to bed early.

You must fight a daily battle for between 4 and 6 months before you finally forget about them! But the battle is worth it. You will find your lungs feel better in the first few days. You will smell better in a few days. You will be able to taste food again in a couple of weeks. And 1 to 2 years later, your lungs will recover greatly. Good luck. It is worth it and you can do it.

Wake Up and Breathe: Stop Smoking, Part Three

What prompted me to quit smoking in 2001 was that I became a Wellness Consultant. Now, how could I effectively consult with others about wellness while I was a cigarette smoker? It was just too hypocritical! Caring about others and sharing information is integral to the woman I am. It's my hope that at least one smoker reading this will stamp out that butt once and for all! YOU have to want to do it. How have I remained a non-smoker? It's simple. I will not put a cigarette between my lips and this way I remain a non-smoker. It's a choice.

Besides the motivation to quit smoking provided by being a Wellness Consultant at the time, I chose a positive mindset to accomplish my goal.
• I viewed quitting smoking as something I was gaining versus something I was giving up. (What a difference perspective can make!)
• I no longer worried about those wicked little burn holes ruining a favorite shirt
• No more scrubbing clean the nasty amber grime of nicotine from my car's interior windows
• No sweat about an airplane delay keeping me minutes from my next smoke
• No missing part of a movie because I had to step outside the theater for a cigarette
• Don't need to reach for a pack before I answer a ringing phone
• No more aggravation over now familiar NO SMOKING signs in most public places

It's amazing how much time a non-smoker gains once they've given up the drama of a smoking life. There is no more of that familiar "I'm just going to have a cigarette before I.." vacuum the carpet, feed the dogs, take out the garbage, play with the cat, clean the dishes, mow the lawn, shampoo the baby, pull weeds, pull out your hair, etc.

There are lots of different methods to quitting. A lover of words and desktop publishing, I created a bunch of the signs made from circles with a cigarette in the center and a diagonal line through it, then blatantly stole Nike's slogan "Just Do It" which I printed beneath the graphic. I made a multitude of signs like this & placed them in my car's glove box, on the visor, in my medicine cabinet, in drawers at home and at work, on closet doors - you get the picture. I wanted, no I needed these reminders that my goal was a worthy one. It worked.

I had the pleasure of judging an eBook contest a couple of months ago and read an excellent book on the subject by Jennifer Clare: Stub Out the Habit. (No I'm not earning affiliate commission on it.) You may just find it helpful.

Recently, I picked up a pricey prescription for an oral inhaler and noticed a perplexed look on the pretty young pharmacist's face. I ruefully commented that because I wanted to be really cool when I was about 14 years old, I now get to pay over $58 for a prescription like this. Wow. Not. So. Cool.

Be smarter than I was: wake up and breathe.

Some Ways to Quit Smoking

All smokers are aware of the health risks that smoking brings; in fact, this is even the primary reason of a lot of smokers wanting to quit. Health is wealth and that is what drives smokers to stop; however, smoking has become an addiction and they would really find it difficult to stop. That is why people would not ask why they should quit because they are fully aware of the serious health risks. The question that they would like to be answered is how to quit smoking. It is not a problem, however, as there are various ways of quitting.

There are many different ways of stopping smoking. The effectiveness of these methods varies within each person. One way to quit smoking is acupuncture. Acupuncture has been said to be effective in easing some of the negative effects of smoking such as the cravings and all. Another way of quitting is by finding alternative activities which really promote a healthy lifestyle such as engaging in sports like badminton and tennis. Other alternatives could also be bowling, playing video games, chewing gum or any other healthy hobby which one would enjoy doing whether he or she is bored.

Confiding in friends and family is also an effective way of quitting smoking. These people who are considered the closest to you can be inspirations in quitting smoking. They can be a person's support systems whenever they feel the need to smoke because of the various pressures and stresses that they are feeling may it be from work, school or any other source. One can also have a therapist or a counselor to guide them through as they altogether help one cease smoking. It may take a long time and these methods may be simple but they are really effective, especially with the right mindset and determination.

One just cannot quit smoking in an instant. It takes months or even years to actually stop smoking and it takes a number of years before the body is restored to its state before one started the habit. One may have his packet and cigarette stick number decreased from time to time until it reaches zero; it all depends on the person. It is reassuring, though that one will definitely have a rewarding experience as he journeys to the way of quitting smoking. The results will be splendid as well because people today blend well with a non-smoker rather than with a smoker.

How Bad Friends Remind Me Of How Cigarettes Are

Is there a soul out there who has never had a bad friend? "Oxymoron!" you say. "How can a friend be a bad friend?" Well, from experience I can tell you something:

Once upon a time when quite young there was an older guy who was quite colorful. He was funny and always liked the excitement of a trick he'd play on someone. I wasn't an angel myself, and his expertise at doing mischievous things really impressed me like no one.

So all through childhood we became infrequent pals. My path was much straighter than his. He went to various schools for behavior; but whenever I'd see him, we would pal around.

But looking back, he had me on a failure track in that I did things too early... Rather than stick with my own age, I'd elect to be with him and his escapades.

It took me years--maybe sixty--before I clearly saw that our friendship in youth was not healthy as I grew up. I am sure several things I didn't do well came in part from being his friend.

I do not see him now. If I did, I would be cordial. I don't begrudge our youth. But I would be wary of his friendship right now.

The same is true of someone else. This second guy was more of an intellectual, and I thought of him as a cool mentor on topics that I knew little about. But knowing him deprived me of recognizing the truth about how I should live. However, I do respect him for what he's done in life, But I would not want to be involved with him for my sake.

Cigarette smoking is so much like these bad friends. On the surface they're something cool. They make us feel as if we've been transported to a better realm in our lifestyle. Life is more exciting. We feel a lot older (when we're quite young) and in the 'know' about aspects of life that others might not share.

Our cigarettes give us a new camaraderie with other folks who smoke, too. We're like a band of cool rebels-recognizing life's deal and escaping it some.

We really cannot perceive the truth of cigarette smokes. How could they be so bad?... There is always a 'drunk uncle' who lived to be ninety, And didn't he smoke, too? And that guy down the street: he has a cigarette-in-mouth every time we see him. He looks as fit as a fiddle.

There is an old saying: "For every prejudice there is a lie someone swears by"- and just like some bad friends cigarettes can make you lie to yourself about their worth.

The funny thing is, that once you swear off bad friends, you sense a new freedom in life. Suddenly, you are the true master of your realm.

I hasten to add candidly: cigarettes will get by just fine without your love... just as my bad friends don't miss me. There are always others to whom they can befriend... And the world goes around and 'round...

Stopping Smoking Is Easier With Hypnotherapy

Are you tired of the smoking habit?

More people than ever are now trying to stop smoking.

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable deaths in Britain with about 114,000 deaths per year. It costs the NHS about 1.5 billion a year.

Have you tried to stop smoking in the past but found it too difficult to quit?

Many people who smoke are also trying to stop. They are often sick and tired of the smell, the cost and the negative health risks that being a smoker brings. They are fed up and bored of the burden of smoking. Non smokers sometimes can not really understand how frustrating being a smoker can be and how difficult quitting really is for some people, it can sometimes be incredibly hard. Smokers often feel very guilty for smoking especially if they have children who are aware of the risks.

Do you feel frustrated that you have not manage to give up yet?

Most smokers have tried many times to stop smoking. They have often been to NHS counselling sessions and have also tried nicotine replacement patches, gum and sprays. They have even tried medications such as Champix that may have unpleasant side effects. These treatments rely on addressing the addiction to nicotine but do not treat the habit of smoking.

Have you ever thought of trying hypnosis?

Perhaps the real reason you have failed to quit successfully in the past is you did not address the issues and the habit in your subconscious mind and that is how hypnosis can really help.

Hypnotherapy is a very safe, quick and effective method. There are no pills or patches and it is instant. Hypnosis helps by helping to change the patterns of behaviour and break the bad habit, removing the desire to smoke, and the psychological dependance. Hypnotherapists can reframe your thinking so that stopping smoking becomes a really positive thing to do and you don't feel as though you are missing out by stopping. It can help you to feel disgusted by smoking and really repulsed by the habit so that you are not ever tempted to smoke in the future. Helping you to be free of the habit of smoking forever. It is so quick and easy that most clients quit after just one session. Whether you are 18 years old or 80 years old as long as you have a genuine desire to stop smoking it is never too late to quit.

Lisa Smith is a Registered Clinical Hypnotherapist at Cheshire Hypnotherapy Est 10yrs in Altrincham. I am a member of the National Council for hypnotherapy. I often help clients with psychological issues such as stress and anxiety. I also help clients with Phobias, IBS, Insomnia, Bulimia and childbirth. Hypnotherapy is also great for stopping smoking and weight loss.

How Cigarette Smokers Should Start Allowing Dreams To Help Them As This Lady Did

I had this dream where I'm sitting with some people, and my wife asks me to tell a story about some sort of transformation that happened in a person.

Try as I might I can't recall the one she refers to. I start talking of a couple on a motorcycle, but I can't seem to turn it into a decent story.

Then a fellow comes in and says our meeting must be over in a few minutes. I'm tempted to make an apology for not recalling the transformation but instead try again: I tell of a woman who has some growth inside of her. She goes to a doctor- recommended by the primary guy she'd visited-and this second doctor tells her she will have a dream that will help drive out this growth.

Well, the next few nights while asleep she can't recall any dream she has-although each morning on waking up, she has the feeling that something has been revealed to her... but she can't remember.

However, on the third night she has a dream where her growth becomes a large cabbage-huge-and she invites all of her friends and relatives and even a few strangers to participate in a big feast on this huge cabbage.

And all of the guests eat some of this huge cabbage-until there is not a piece left. In the morning when she awakens, she recalls the dream. She calls her first doctor to have him check her out. He laughs at her story but says he has an opening later that week. When she comes in-and he looks at the spot where the growth was-it has indeed vanished; but he sends her to have some more tests done, which show there is no growth.

Can you believe that dreams can help you in this way? We are in an age when you can go to your computer or any other piece of fast data wizardry and get all sorts of great information quickly. But that is just information.

... What a lot of smokers are looking for-maybe without saying so consciously-is something that transforms them from where they are now-with their smoking addiction-to a plain of consciousness that will really help them.

You know: only seven percent of folks who want to stop their smoking succeed so. The rest of the folks have a heck of a time giving up their long time buddy. So there is no question that it is time to go back to a source that has served folks since the dawn of mankind; and that is dreams.

The program that I have is much harder than most. If a smoker can stop with the other programs out there... well, that's where he should go. But if he's in the ninety-three percent group who has tried other programs and come up with nothing that helps him stop, then perhaps that smoker's ready to start dreaming.

He just might have a dream that helps him stop smoking in some unimaginable way that works for him, just like the lady in the cabbage dream was helped to get rid of the growth she'd had inside her.
