Regardless of the expensive TV and radio commercials, and the hundreds of advertisements on city streets, it still seems impossible to stop people from breaking their old smoking habit. And for heavy smokers, kicking those butts out their lives is an uphill battle.
People have different reasons why they smoke. Some want to look cool, others smoke because of peer pressure, it's all part of growing-up. However, one thing is sure - smoking has enormously dangerous effect on your health and appearance. Yes! Smoking ruins your appearance. So it is best that you quit smoking while you are still able to look at yourself in the mirror without breaking it:
1. Smoking causes those bags beneath your eyes.
According to studies, smokers are more likely to have restless nights compared to non-smokers. They usually experience uneasy nights which may result to lack of sleep. This can be attributed to the sudden decrease of nicotine intake while trying to sleep.
2. Smoking increases the risk of psoriasis.
The cause of psoriasis is not directly attributed to smoking. However, if you're a smoker your risk of developing psoriasis greatly increases. Studies show that, if you smoke 1 pack per day for ten years, your risk is increased to 20%, and in the next decade it is increased to 60%.
3. You get icky teeth.
Nicotine found in cigarettes stains your teeth and gives it the yellowish color. You don't want people giving you that strange look every time you smile, do you?
4. Smoking speeds up hair fall.
Well, men who smoke is more likely to lose their hairs compare to non-smokers. Tobacco smoke has toxic chemicals and destructive free radicals that are capable of damaging the DNA in your hair follicles. Smokers tend to have thinner hair and experience gray hair sooner.
5. Smoking causes dental problems.
Smokers have high risk of getting oral cancer and gum infections which may lead to tooth loss compared to non-smokers. There are lots of important works than sitting in your dentist's chair.
6. Smoking kills the natural glow on your skin.
When you smoke, essential nutrients and vitamins are flushed out of your body. Carbon monoxide from cigarette smoke removes the oxygen on your skin. Nicotine prevents the regular blood flow which leaves your skin dry and pale.
7. Smokers have high risk of getting human papilloma virus.
Though it can be directly attributed to smoking, smokers have greater risk of getting human papilloma virus, this is the strain of virus that causes warts, including that of the genital warts. So smokers beware! Even though genital warts are considered sexually transmitted HPV, smoking still plays an important role. Women who smoke are four times at greater risk.
8. Smoking speeds up aging.
Nicotine in every stick of cigarettes causes damage to the fibers connecting the tissues in your skin which causes your skin to lose strength and elasticity. So don't be surprised if you have more wrinkles compared to people of your age.
9. Smokers are more likely to have sagging tummies.
Some studies revealed that smokers have more visceral fats that those who do not smoke. These fats later cover the internal organs and can build up in your mid section.
10. Smoking increases the risk of having cataracts.
The cigarette smoke puts oxidative stress on the lens of your eyes. Heavy smoking can increase the risk up to 22 percent.
