How To Get Someone To Quit Smoking

Is smoking a personal choice that only affects the smoker?


NO!


Smoking is a health hazard so great that... and the scariest thing is an estimated... people in the world take part in it.


SO HOW DO YOU GET SOMEONE TO KICK THIS HABIT FOR GOOD?


1. Ask the person if he smokes. Even if you've known that person your whole life, ask the person. You'll get that person to acknowledge his smoking habit out loud not only to you but also to himself.


2. Ask the person how long he's been smoking in years.


3. Ask the person how many cigarettes that person has smoked a day. The purpose of these two questions is to make the person understand how serious his smoking habit is.


4. Ask the person if he is willing to quit.


5. If the person is willing to quit then ask the person what is stopping him from quitting, i.e. what are his barriers? Gaining weight? Depression? Fear of failure? Listen to the person's concerns respectfully and do not mock the person. Then try to work through the person's barriers by involving a primary care physician. Research has proven that the most effective quitters are the ones who regularly contact their physician who can provide them with endless smoking related counseling as well as nicotine products.


If the person is not willing to quit, then ask the patient what he benefits from smoking. When the patient responds, then tell the patient about the big risks of smoking including infertility, many different types of cancers (not only lung, but also bladder, esophageal, pancreatic and oral cancers), bad breath, dry mouth,heart attacks, ulcers, and the list goes on and on. Remember to play on that person's fears - if the person is concerned with his weight and image, then tell the person smoking ages smokers and causes premature wrinkles.

If the person is a father, mention the numerous health benefits not only for himself but also for his children. If the person is a lover, mention that he'll smell better once he quits, and so on.


6. Remove all smoking related paraphernalia. This includes cigarettes, lighters, ashtrays, and cigars from the home, office, and car.


7. Make the person keep a record of what stimulates smoking. He can just carry a piece of paper with him and write down when he feels like smoking - is it when he's in the car? in bed? when watching tv?


8. Set up a date when that person will begin the quitting. This should be marked specifically on a calendar to mentally prepare the person for quitting, and after that day the person should not smoke even once.


9. Reward the person for not smoking when he feels like it. Remember that piece of paper that has all the stimuli for smoking (step 7)? Well, when the person overcomes the urge and doesn't smoke, give him a small reward or just acknowledge and encourage his effort.


10. Encourage regular physician follow ups. As I said before, the most successful quitters are the ones who involve physicians. So the person should be encouraged to visit his doctor at least once a week for the first month of quitting, then once every 2 weeks, and so on.


Remember that above all else, the person needs support from family and friends. So don't be judgmental or impatient.

How To Quit Smoking, And Feel Like You Have Never Smoked In Your Life

For most smokers discovering and to quit smoking and then feeling like they have never smoked is a dream. If only this were possible. This is not only possible but it's a daily reality for smokers all over the world.


During the initial chat portion of my quit smoking programme I tell my clients that 30% of people will quit and feel as if they have never smoked at all. 30% will have some thoughts of smoking such as when having a coffee, but this is just a passing thought.


30% will have to be vigilant especially where alcohol is involved, usually lots of it. As alcohol tends to diss-inhibit there is a risk that you will smoke or more likely someone will just light one up and give it to you.


5% will need another session and 5% will simply not be able to quit in my clinic.


So what happens to the 30% who quit without any further thought? In my experience they have a few things in common.


1. They are 100% committed to quitting. They have reached a point of realising there is absolutely no benefit for them in smoking any longer.


2. They fill out there pre session questionnaire in specific detail. This means they have taken the time to really think about what smoking is doing to them. Those who don't take the time to properly consider their answers are usually still in some denial about their smoking habit.


3. They accept the new information they receive about cigarettes, for example that smoking actually causes more anxiety than relaxation. Some want to debate the issue, which is simply a scientific fact.


4. Even though they may be nervous they approach the hypnosis with a sense of adventure and anticipation.


5. They do the recommended follow up instructions.


While there is a degree of uncertainty as to exactly who will quit with no feelings of having ever smoked, the chances are greatly enhanced when you follow the five steps above.


But don't despair if you quit and still have some thoughts about smoking, this will be the experience for many people. Just stick to your programme and always remember to never ever have one cigarette, not one puff or draw on a smoke.


The rules is if you never have another cigarette then you will never have another cigarette. This may sound a little simplistic right now, but when you quit with advanced hypnosis it will become a reality.

Introduction:


Smoking constitutes one of the most problematic health and social issues facing the modern society. The world Health Organisation states that tobacco is the second major cause of death in the world, with smoking related illnesses killing about 5 million people yearly world-wide. The need to eradicate this menace has therefore become expedient now than ever. In order to do this, the factors which influence people to smoke must be identified together with the interventions that can be made so as to prevent or stop people from smoking.

Smoking is influenced at four different levels; the individual, the family, the locality and the society at large.

The Hard Part About Quitting Smoking

With all of the many options available to a smoker, you would think that it should be pretty easy to find one that works for you. But, so many smokers try one method and then relapse, try another method and relapse and then, becoming tired of failure, they simply give up!


Among the many options that a smoker has at their disposal are the many brands of nicotine patches, nicotine gums, nicotine sprays on the market over the counter. 1) I still enjoy it. When I hear this from my clients I tell them that it's fine if they are still 'enjoying it'. Just because you might be enjoying it, that doesn't mean that you're not ready to quit. If you are waiting for some time in your future when you hate every single cigarette before you decide to quit, chances are that time will never come and you'll just continue to kid yourself.


If you think about all the cigarettes you smoke in a day, how many would you say that you are really there, in the moment, 'enjoying' that cigarette? If you're like most of the people I've seen, probably not many. If you think about it, most of the cigarettes you're having are just getting in the way of something else and you're not really enjoying it at all. Often you might be having them in a rush, to just get your little 'fix' so you can just get on with what you were doing before the cigarette. What an inconvenient hassle right? If it is something you truly enjoy why wouldn't you encourage children to do it?


2) Stress / it relaxes me. I've already touched on this, but let's go into a bit more detail shall we. Many of my clients will say that it's stress that keeps them smoking. Or they'll say they are going through a stressful time, and hence they are not ready to quit. I'm sure you recognise that this is not accurate at all. Simply because nicotine is a stimulant, it actually elevates your body's internal state of stress. It raises your blood pressure, increased your heart rate and stimulates your nervous system - all the things that put the body into a state of stress.


If you think about it, it's all the things that you are doing right after a stressful situation that is reducing your stress, except the cigarette. Let's say for example you're sitting at your desk and something stressful has happened. Or you've just had an argument with your partner. What do then usually do? You say 'right, I'm going for a cigarette'. You leave the room or the office, you go outside the building, you go find a nice quiet place to yourself to have a moment on your own. Your taking some nice slow deep breathes, you're thinking about the situation and what you're going to do to address it, you're having some thinking time. Then you go back inside and psychologically you've DE-stressed, but physiologically, you're actually in a higher state of stress than before you went out the door!


I say to people, if you had done the exact same things, but you just left the cigarette out, get up, go outside, find a place to yourself, take some deep breathes, have a moment to think and then come back, you'll find that you'll be mentally AND physically relaxed.


You see, breathing is THE most important thing in your entire life. We all know what happens when you stop breathing. But any benefits that you're getting from the deep breathing that is actually REQUIRED while smoking, is all just gone from the 4,000 chemicals you're inhaling at the same time. However, if you take some slow deep breathes during any kind of stressful situation, you're body will instantly react in a calming, relaxing way.


One of the main jobs of your heart is to pump oxygen around your body. So the more oxygen you give it, the more it slows down because the less it needs to work. The more oxygen you send to your brain the more relaxed you feel. If you were take 20 slow deep breathes right now, you'd instantly feel the positive difference in your body.


The funny thing about the flip side of the stress excuse is that people will often say that they also smoke when they are relaxing, maybe on a holiday, not stressed at all. 3) Poor will power. Some people will say that they just haven't had the will power, or they got poor will power. The idea that will power can get you to quit is to assume that it's your conscious mind that is in control of your smoking, but it isn't. At the end of the day, you can know all the reasons on a conscious level how silly smoking is, how there are no real benefits to it, which you probably already know. However it more than likely won't be enough to get you to quit because it's not your conscious mind that is controlling your smoking. If it was, then every single person would just wake up one day and just QUIT - cold turkey. Some people can do it with the tips mentioned above, but a lot can't.

If you are like most people you have probably heard that nicotine is one of the most additive drugs there is. How Can I Stop Smoking? You Need To Have Personal Reasons

How do I stop smoking? Just quit smoking today. It seems so easy to do and say. Obviously it isn't. If it was then so many people wouldn't fail.


The first thing you have to know when you are trying to quit smoking is you have to want to quit for
yourself. If you are trying to quit because someone else wants you to or is telling you to you will probably fail.

Support For Quitting Smoking, Think Like A Diabetic

Quitting smoking using cold turkey or nicotine replacement can create a series of symptoms. Headache, shaky hands, anger, loss of concentration. Most smokers think this is the effect of withdrawal from cigarettes, but they are wrong.


Nicotine withdrawal itself has very little in the way of physical symptoms. If you have ever missed a meal and become really hungry you will be familiar with the above symptoms. Nicotine artificially elevates your blood sugar, so that when you quit smoking, what you are really experiencing is the effects of hypoglycaemia or low blood sugar.


This is why people feel bad and why they eat too much. Ex smokers quickly become aware that if they eat, and especially if they eat sweet foods they will feel better and their symptoms will disappear, for a while at least.


Knowledge is power, once you realise that you are eating to manage your blood sugar and it has nothing to do with nicotine withdrawal, then you can take action. I say to clients that they need to think like a diabetic because if they don't quit smoking they will become a diabetic anyway.


The solution is to ensure that your blood sugar is stable all day. If you think of a graph, as a smoker the graph has lots of highs and lows. At the lows you need to smoke, at the highs your insulin pulls down your blood sugar until you reach the lows when you need another cigarette.


Unless you properly manage this the lows on the graph are just replaced by sweet foods. The key is to eat breakfast; most smokers just have a cigarette and coffee to start the day. You must replace the smoke with some real food. Some oats or toast and egg for example.


You must eat lunch and dinner. In between you can't let yourself become hungry, the best food is apples. The fructose of the apple blends with the fibre in the peel, and the result is a slow absorbance of the fructose.


This gives a nice flat energy graph. If you have an apple between meals and one late at night if you are hungry then you won't feel the need to eat junk to keep you going. If you do heavy work add a few cashews or almonds.


The idea is to eat enough at any meal to prevent hunger and to keep topping up during the day. This will make quitting much easier. Using hypnosis will solve all of your habitual problems.
