A while back one of my co-workers husbands was given a diagnosis of cancer in his throat and on his vocal chords. During the time he was going to the doctor and having tests done the subject of whether he smoked or had ever smoked in the past came up, and the answer is yes he had smoked and was still doing so. Over the course of several months he (Don) went to the clinic and saw a number of specialist's did a number of test's and of course a biopsy of the tumors in his throat.
After all was said and done, the tests came back and yes it was Cancer. the medical specialists scheduled an exploratory surgery to see how bad it had spread and if it could be removed. After an extensive surgery and removal of some cancerous tissue, Don was then scheduled for his rounds of Chemo.
After several rounds of the toxic stuff they call "Chemo", Don's tumors had shrunken enough for his doctors to call his Cancer in remission. Remission can be difficult, is the Cancer really gone? Is it starting to grow and come back, When Don and I spoke his Cancer was always a topic of conversation. How his treatment was going, what was going to be next, it was all consuming... took over his life.
After it was all said and done, Don kept his vocal chords, his voice was never the same though, it was raspy and horse, he had difficulty speaking and his breathing was labored. On one of his final visits to the doctor, he was told to quit smoking. ALL of his issues were DIRECTLY related to SMOKING! The doctor said that if he did not quit smoking his survival was going to be somewhere in the 1-2 years range. If he quit, he could live a normal life span with no other complications.
After all his doctoring was done, the surgery, the Chemo and not to mention all the mental anguish, much to my surprise Don had not quit smoking! All this pain and suffering and CANCER directly caused by smoking and Don could not give up his cigarettes. About a year later, and after another Cancer scare, Don did finally give up smoking, but it was after finding another lump in his throat and even more Chemo therapy.
