It is said that at any time only 10% of smokers really are committed to stop smoking. I'm sure many smokers will have said many times, that they know they have to quit but they don't really want to.
So a conflict is created. The conscious mind knows of the dangers and risks, it sees the ads on television and notices the gory images on cigarette packets.
But the unconscious mind keeps feeding you the thought that smoking helps stress or is relaxing, or helps you to think.
The bad news is that the unconscious mind will win most battles. That is why quitting cold turkey has a low success rate.
The subconscious keeps the desire alive, and drives the thought that you don't want to quit inspite of knowing that you have to for your health.
There can also be some conscious resistance. Some people enjoy the action of drawing deeply on a cigarette. Sometimes these people can switch to an artificial cigarette, which provides the sensation of inhaling. In every case my clients have simply returned to smoking at some point.
The feeling of inhaling can be duplicated by deep breathing. Most people will naturally do it to relax or to energise themselves.
Some like the taste of cigarettes. This can be difficult to duplicate, but the smell of brewing coffee and drinking strong coffee can at times match the burnt flavour of smoking.
The perceived relaxation of smoking is easily achieved by just taking time out to relax, perhaps with a cup of coffee or tea.
Using smokes to help you to think is again achieved by taking a few moments. In a past life I was a builder. My smoking friends would smoke while studying the plans and they claimed that it helped them to think. I achieved the same concentration by just reading the plans while having a snack.
If you make a list of all the reasons you smoke, then ask some non smokers what they do to get the same effect. You will find that all the reasons you smoke are managed by other non toxic means.
The light should go on at this point, what it means is that all your reasons for smoking don't have any validity.
Once you reach this point you will be ready to quit. All that remains to do is to find a good hypnotherapist to guide you through the process.
